Brad Averitt - Automobile Business Background

Brad Austin Averitt was born in the small town of Abilene, Texas. His father, Gene Ray Averitt was General Manager for a Volkswagen Dealership at the time of Brad’s birth in November of 1960. Volkswagen (VW) had a new model of car (The Beatle) that had come over to the U.S. a few years back, just about every family in a America (over the next couple of decades) probably owned one of these cars, which started a trend of imported cars in the U.S. At that time Volkswagen of America would or could only allocate so many of these cars to America. But everyone wanted the great little economical car. Heck you could buy one for $1595 dollars and the only option you could add to the car was a right hand mirror. Automatic Transmission and Air Conditioner did not even come out till a few years later and the A/C was an add-on under dash unit. So his Father and a few other eager VW dealers in Texas wanted to create a service to this ever-growing trend of people wanting the little car. After a few months of research they found out they could bring these cute little cars, wanted by all types of motoring friends, in through the Country of Mexico (Bootleg). Now. In today’s times this would be a major NO-NO! But times were different then, I mean allot different. Any way to make a long story shorter …… this created a great service to the customer and put North West Texas on the map for the place to buy VW’s.

In 1969 The Averitt family moved to Dallas where his father was the General Manger for the new Dallas dealership, Young Chevrolet. Soon after he opened another VW and a Porsche / Audi store in Dallas as well. In the early 70’s people thought auto leasing was a fancy name for car rental. In 1971, His Dad’s first lease customers where two young, soon to be successful guys from California. Craig Morton, the new Quarterback draft choice for the Dallas Cowboys and his college roommate an up in coming restaurateur named Mel Holland. Both wanted to lease Porsche 911’s. Dad soon afterwards sold out of the Porsche/Audi store. He wanted to go solely into the Automobile Lease Market 100%.

From then one of the first Independent Lease Companies in Texas was formed. The business was named Tejas Leasing and was located nowhere else but The Dallas Cowboy World Headquarters Building at Yale and Central Expressway in Dallas, just above the Playboy Club, of all places. They started advertising in the Southwest Edition of the Wall Street Journal and the phone lit up like firecrackers on the Forth of July Holiday. By this time it was in the late 70’s and Brad and his brother Gregg where just going off to Northwood University to learn the ropes of Dealership Management. A School back by the NADA and Auto Dealers from around the country. From than on the Averitt family contributed to the ever so lasting strong market of Automobile Leasing in Dallas TX.
